Grade 2 is studying improvisation. We did an activity using the song “Traffic Lights” from Game Plan 2.
First they sing and play the song on xylophones. Next, the police officer points to a red, yellow, or green light. The students then move accordingly with their bodies (fast, slow, or frozen movements) or on the instruments.
At the same time, students are encouraged to play tastefully on the instruments, paying close attention to their mallet height and using neighbor notes in their improvisations.
Here is the song without the improvisation section:
Students, how is your stick height? Are you alternating your hands? Are you keeping a steady beat? Are you continuing to sing while you play?
